BY SARAH

Sveti Stefan is one of Montenegro’s most famous and photogenic destinations. The tiny islet, with its stone houses and terracotta rooftops, sits on the Adriatic coast, connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway.

It’s a place that exudes exclusivity, but can you actually visit it? What’s the best way to experience Sveti Stefan? And where should you stay if you want to be close to this stunning spot?

I’ve been exploring Montenegro since 2008, and in this guide, I’ll give you everything you need to know about visiting Sveti Stefan, including its history, accessibility, nearby beaches, best hotels, and local experiences.

What Is Sveti Stefan?

Sveti Stefan started as a fishing village in the 15th century and became a glamorous retreat for celebrities and royalty in the mid-20th century. It was transformed into an exclusive resort, attracting names like Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, and Princess Margaret.

Today, the island is known for its luxury hotel, Aman Sveti Stefan, which operated on the islet until 2021. Due to lease disputes, the hotel is currently closed, meaning public access to the island is restricted.

So, while you can’t wander its narrow lanes or stay in its exclusive suites right now, there are still ways to experience its beauty.

Where Is Sveti Stefan?

Sveti Stefan sits on Montenegro’s southwestern coast, about 10 km from Budva.

  • From Podgorica Airport: 1-hour drive (about 55 km)
  • From Tivat Airport: 45-minute drive (about 30 km)
  • From Kotor: 50-minute drive along the scenic coastal road

Can You Visit Sveti Stefan?

Right now, you cannot enter the island unless you’re a guest at the Aman resort (if it reopens). But that doesn’t mean you should skip it!

Here’s how to experience Sveti Stefan without stepping foot on the island:

  • Take in the view from the mainland: The best viewpoint is along the coastal road from Budva.
  • Relax on Sveti Stefan Beach: With small pink pebbles and fine sand, crystal clear water and that fairytale view, Sveti Stefan beach is incredible!
  • Boat tours: Private boat charters from Budva offer stunning views from the water.

Local's Tip: Drive up to St. Sava Church, above Sveti Stefan for panoramic views of the islet.

  • Miločer Beach: A beautiful stretch backed by Villa Miločer, the formal royal residence.

Miločer Forest Park

Milocer Beach

Miločer's Botanical Garden is another of the area's attractions. Spanning 18 hectares, this expansive garden is a beautiful place for a walk.

Within the park, you'll find an array of plants that were carefully brought to Montenegro from various Asian and African countries.

As you wander through the garden, you'll find mimosas, magnolias, and many old olives. The garden also boasts an impressive collection of agaves and cacti.

Watch the Sunset

The Budva Riviera is famous for its stunning sunsets over the Adriatic Sea, and Sveti Stefan is a magical place to watch the sunset.

Position yourself on the public beach to the left side of the island to get fantastic views of the sun dipping behind the island.

Or enjoy it from one of the restaurants in the area. Olive has close up views from the beach, while Hotel Adrovic offers elevated views of Sveti Stefan with the sun setting on the horizon.
