The top hotels in Bar, Montenegro encompass everything from big and luxurious to boutique getaways. Whatever your style, you'll be sure to find your perfect escape.
Unlike the Bay of Kotor and the Budva Riviera, Bar and the Bar Riviera aren’t really tourist hot spots for foreign tourists. They’re more popular with Balkan tourists and those wanting to get off the beaten track.
But this doesn’t mean you won’t find top hotels here and you won’t have to skimp on comfort. There are some great hotels in Bar which you can use as a base to explore this relatively unknown area.
Ulcinj, with it's old town and huge sandy beaches, is just 30 minutes from Bar. Likewise, Lake Skadar, one of the most important bird reserves in Europe, is also a half hour drive. If you're keen on a seaside holiday in Montenegro away from the typical destinations of the Bay of Kotor and the Budva Riviera, Bar could be perfect for you.
Bar is also Montenegro’s main transport hub and this is
where you’ll be able to get a train to Belgrade or a ferry to Italy, so it’s a
popular overnight stop for travelers.
If you’re arriving on the train from Belgrade, you’ll probably arrive around 9pm and one of the hotels in Bar town will be a convenient stop for the night if you’re moving on the next morning.
But you're not restricted to just the hotels in town. If you’re looking for that beach holiday in an undiscovered location, you must look at the hotels along the Bar Riveria. You’ll find everything from big and kid-friendly to boutique getaways. I guarantee you’ll be the envy of all your friends! Click here to see the top Bar Riviera hotels.
Let’s check out the top 10 hotels in Bar, on Montenegro's south coast.
Hotel Princess is the largest hotel in Bar and it’s right on the waterfront, a short walk from the town centre. This is one of the old government owned hotels that’s been privatized so you can expect to get a bit of the Yugo experience.
It’s the only hotel in Bar with indoor and outdoor pools and it also has a private area on the pebble beach in front of the hotel.
There’s also a wellness centre and conference facilities, making it the best choice for business travelers in Bar.
My tip is to get a sea view room so you can watch the boats and people passing on the promenade from your balcony.
The restaurant on the ground floor is a popular spot with locals and is known for its desserts. If you stay here or just stop for coffee, you must try the ‘priganice’ – little fried dough balls served with cheese and honey on the side.
With just three rooms and its popularity, you’ll have to book early to get a room at Le Petit Chateau.
Apart Hotel Kuce Lekovica is just outside of Bar in a pine forest on the beach – a really unique location that's great for kids. It’s also a great place to find a quiet beach getaway, even in the height of summer.
This area is off the main drag so it’s quieter than other parts of the Bar Riviera, like Sutomore.
This is a family run hotel and they’re known for their personal touch and nothing-is-too-much attitude.
Apart Hotel Stijovic has a range of rooms that sleep anywhere from 2 to 10 people. It’s one of the best options in Bar for families and groups needing more space.
There’s no onsite restaurant so you’ll have to cook or eat out, but the kitchens in the apartments are enough to cook basic meals and it’s not far to town. It’s also walking distance from the beach.

Ok, so the hotels we’ve looked at so far are okay, but what you really want is that lovely beachfront hotel you’ve been dreaming of:
The smaller seaside resorts of the Bar Riviera are the places to look and there are some great hotels here, from boutique to big, family-friendly to honeymoon material.
Let’s explore the best Bar Riviera hotels!
And it’s far from any noisy bars or beach clubs. This is the kind of place you can really relax and unwind.
It’s got:
Of course no place is perfect and if you’ve read my guide to Bar, you’ll know that this area caters more to Balkan tourists than foreigners. So here are some of the reasons Sutomore and this hotel might not suit you:
If none of those things bother you, Sutomore and this hotel could be perfect. If not, there are more hotels in Sutomore, Dobra Voda and Utjeha that are quiet and have private beaches…
It’s got its own private beach with loungers, so you don’t have to pay for them. There’s also a plunge pool – great for a dip to cool off – and a terrace full of loungers overlooking the sea – bliss!
Although Love Live Hotel is out of the hub-bub of Sutomore, it’s still within walking distance of restaurants and shops and Sutomore is just a 10 minute drive to Bar centre.
Porto Sole is a new hotel at one end of Sutomore, so it’s not in the centre of the action. Still, it’s practically right on the beach so you don’t have far to go. The hotel has indoor and outdoor pools, offers massages, a sauna, gym and there’s a tennis court next door, which makes this a great place if you’re looking for somewhere off season or lying on the beach isn’t your style.
If you feel like exploring, there’s a hill opposite the hotel where you can take a short hike to Fortress Golo Brdo (Naked Hill).
Hotel Sato is a big resort-style hotel on the beachfront in Sutomore. Unlike Apart Hotel Sea Fort, this hotel has a private beach for guests, meaning you don’t have to pay extra for loungers – something I really like. There’s also an outdoor pool and a rooftop bar for making the most of the views with a cocktail.
Being in the centre of Sutomore, everything you need is on your doorstep, but you should also expect a certain amount of loud music from the beach bars and clubs surrounding you.
While not as flash as some of the big resorts, at as little as €48 in summer you're getting a lot of bang for your buck. This is a great getaway if you’re looking for a beachside hotel on a budget.
