"Diving in Montenegro will let you enjoy unforgettable underwater scenery, caves and sunken ships and imagine yourself a member of an expedition hunting the missing treasures of Mediterranean filibusters" - Radan, diving instructor.
Diving in Montenegro is another of Montenegro’s growing number of adventure activities that you can do during your stay.
It doesn’t matter whether you’re a seasoned diver or just want to give it a try for the first time, there are options for everyone.
Savo and I are both divers – Savo a longtime commercial diver and I a recreational diver. We’ve been diving both here in Montenegro and in places like Thailand and Hawaii.
Diving will transport you to another world that you never knew existed!
The most common certification around the world is the PADI certification, the Open Water Diver is the first step, and you can get fully PADI certified right here in Montenegro. The OWD certificate takes 4 days and qualifies you to dive around the world.
If you don’t have 4 days for your OWD or you’re not sure diving is for you, you can also just try diving in Montenegro with a dive experience. Dive experiences teach you the basics in a pool before taking you out in the sea with an instructor.
I have to say that with the sea temperature here of around 26 degrees in summer and the visibility more than 20m, I would rather do my qualifications here than in the 16 degree water and 5m visibility I did it in at home in New Zealand!
Montenegro's seafloor has a huge number of shipwrecks to explore as well as underwater caves and the rocky floor makes it ideal for spotting sealife like fish, octopus, urchins and starfish.
So, on to the options for diving in Montenegro...
If you’ve never been diving before, but want to give it a try, this is the experience for you.
This tour picks you up from your accommodation and brings you to the dive centre. There, an experienced instructor takes you through the basics of diving before fitting you with equipment.
Once you're kitted up you get to practise in a swimming pool to make sure you're completely comfortable before heading into the sea. The sea dive takes you down to a maximum of 12m for 35 minutes. The instructor will always be with you during the dive.
After your dive a transfer will take you back to your accommodation.

If you've already completed your diver certification, you can join a day tour and spend the day exploring various dive sites around Montenegro.
The dives on this tour take you to ship wrecks along the coast and to explore underwater caves.
All of the dives include an experience instructor as your guide.
